Following the lead of Honda and BMW Motorrad, KTM is also venturing into the automatic transmission market for motorcycles. The Austrian brand recently unveiled its new AMT (Automatic Manual Transmission) prototype at the Erzbergrodeo 2024, which took place last weekend. The prototype participated in the Iron Road Prologue category, which is designated for twin-cylinder motorcycles, suggesting that it is likely based on the forthcoming 1390 Adventure model.

KTM To Reveal Details For AMT Prototype

KTM plans to reveal full details of the AMT prototype on September 24th. However, a teaser video featuring two-time World Enduro Champion Johnny Aubert riding the prototype provides some insights into the new technology. Notably, the clutch lever is absent, while the shift lever by the left foot remains. Additionally, switches on the left handlebar grip suggest the presence of shift buttons for gear changes.

Unlike Honda's DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission), KTM’s AMT system uses electrical actuators for gear changes instead of a dual-clutch mechanism. The AMT system features a centrifugal clutch, allowing the rider to stop the motorcycle with the gear engaged and to start moving again seamlessly. While Honda’s DCT allows for both automatic and manual gear shifting via buttons, KTM’s AMT system also permits manual gear changes using the gear lever.

Although details about KTM's new AMT system are yet to be fully disclosed, the company’s decision to debut the prototype at the Erzbergrodeo—one of the most challenging hard enduro events—demonstrates their confidence in this innovative technology.
