Unlike many other carmakers, Toyota has not committed to a dramatic shift towards electric vehicles (EVs). Instead, the company has concentrated on hybrid cars, believing that electric cars will not exceed a 30 percent market share, despite the industry's push towards a zero-emission future.

Toyota Advancing On EVs

However, Toyota has not completely dismissed EVs. Although not as aggressively as other brands, Toyota's EV strategy is advancing as planned. One of their upcoming electric vehicles is the Hilux Revo BEV, slated for a 2025 release. This electric Hilux will be assembled and initially sold exclusively in Thailand.

Toyota may consider exporting the electric Hilux at a later stage. A company executive recently confirmed details about the upcoming electric Hilux. Thailand is a logical choice for its launch due to the high demand for pickup trucks, which make up more than half of all car sales in the country. This creates a significant opportunity for Toyota, especially with competition like the upcoming electric Isuzu D-Max, which will also be assembled in Thailand.

Previously, Toyota stated that the electric Hilux would have a range of about 200 km, although the test cycle used to determine this range was not specified. While 200 km might seem low, it is a common issue with electric pickups, as achieving a higher range requires a larger battery, which can reduce the truck's load-carrying capacity and affect its maneuverability and practicality.

The new-generation internal combustion engine (ICE) Hilux is expected to debut in 2025, and it is likely that the electric Hilux will be based on this new model. Although Toyota has not confirmed this officially. The new-gen Hilux could be better equipped to support advanced features typically found in electric vehicles. In South American markets, the new-gen ICE Hilux will debut in 2026. It is possible that Toyota will launch both the new-gen ICE and electric versions of the Hilux simultaneously in 2025. Additionally, Toyota is likely to introduce a Fortuner Electric based on the same platform in the future.
