New Delhi: You can lock your Aaddhaar Card to safeguard yourself against various types of frauds like unauthorised access to your bank account, stealing of your KYC related information, etc.  It will also enable you to safeguard your biometric information related to fingerprints, iris scans, and even facial recognition data.  To exercise this option you can go on to the website of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) or you can also use the ‘mAadhaar app’ or through SMS.

First Lets See How You Can Lock Your Aadhaar Card On UIDAI’s Website:

1. Go to the UIDAI’s website on this link: https://uidai.gov.in/

2. Mention your Aadhaar number and required OTP to log in to your Aadhaar account

3. Under  the ‘My Aadhaar’ section , go to ‘Lock/Unlock Biometrics’

4. Again enter your Aadhaar number and OTP for verification

5. Then, click on ‘Lock Biometrics’

You will get a confirmation message to lock your Aadhaar Card. There are two more answer to the question ‘How To Lock Aadhaar Card?

You can also lock it in the ‘mAadhaar app’ or you can also use SMS to perform the action. ‘Lets see how you can lock it through SMS:

How To Lock Aadhaar Card Through SMS?

You will have to send two messages to initiate the process.

  1. In the first message,  type GETOTP  followed by last 4 or 8 digits of your Aadhaar Number and send it.
  2. Then, in the second message type ‘LOCKUID followed by last 4 or 8 digits of your Aadhaar Number
  3. Then, you will get a confirmation message from UIDAI pertaining to your request.

According to UIDAI’s website, once it is locked, you will not be able to use your Aadhaar Card to for any kind of authentication  like Biometrics, Demographics or OTP). However, you can still use your latest Virtual ID for Authentication. So far, the government of India has generated 138.33 crore Aadhaar numbers in the country.
