The telecom is in a midst of a fight in which it has faced continuous subscriber churn. Albeit, for the past few months the exodus rate has dropped a bit. But still, nothing can hide the fact that the  telecom needs to gain customers to remain afloat in India’s highly competitive telecom industry.

Saddled with a loan burden of more than Rs 2 lakh crore, the telecom has been trying to not only woo customers but also investors. Recently, it wrapped up Rs 18,000 successful FPO, and a Rs 25,000 debt issue is also in queue.

Apparently, in light of regained love of BSNL’s relatively cheaper plans among subscribers, India’s largest telecom Reliance Jio has launched such a cheap plan.

In July 2024, all three major private telecoms Jio, Airtel and Vi lost 7.50 lakh, 16.9 lakh and 14.1 lakh customers, respectively. While, the state owned teleco, singlehandedly gained 29.3 lakh subscribers. This must have stemmed from the fact that the three private carriers had raised tariffs by 11-25% in July 2024. However, state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), didn’t go for the tariff hike.,

But now it seems, the Mukesh Ambani owned telecom will once again attract customers in forthcoming months as Jio’s new recharge plan of just Rs 3 per day hogs limelight.

Despite of the recent subscriber churn, the cash rich telco continues to be numero uno player of India’s telecom industry with total user base of 47 crore. While, the second largest carrier, Bharti Airtel currently boasts of 38 crore subscribers.

While, debt laden Vodafone Idea is left with total subscriber base of 21 crore customers. Despite of not hiking tariffs, public telecom, BSNL currently has only 8.8 crore user base.
