Devara REVIEW: Jr NTR Single-handedly Carries The Film, But Gets Marred By Weak Storyline
Devara Review: ‘Man Of Masses’ Jr NTR has returned to the big screen after two years with his new action drama ‘Devara’ and has created immense hype among the audiences. Apart from Jr NTR, the movie also stars Saif Ali Khan and Janhvi Kapoor in the lead roles. Set in the 1970s and 80s in the coastal area, ‘Devera’ revolves around a brave man, who becomes the rescuer to ward off the greedy and wrongdoers.
Devera Review
What I Liked
‘Devara’ starts on a strong note and immediately captures your attention. From visually pleasing shots of the sea to Jr NTR’s spectacular entry, the movie successfully teleports you to the world created by director Koratala Siva. The grand introduction of the characters is truly enjoyable if you are a fan of mass commercial cinema as the filmmaker knows how to present its actors as heroes. The background score composed by Anirudh Ravichander is perfect for the heroic setting of ‘Devera’ and uplifts the scenes.
The first half of ‘Devara’ is thoroughly entertaining and has been executed with near perfection. The action sequences, which cover most parts of the film, are the highlight of ‘Devara’ and are well choreographed. These scenes have been impeccably executed, despite a few of them being unbelievable. The VFX is also good and its picturesque shots of sea, underwater and island are visually pleasing.
What I Disliked
Despite having a strong start, the plot of ‘Devara’ weakens in the second half. Even though Jr NTR tries his best, the sudden shift from drama to comedy and romance might not sit well with the viewers.
The introduction of Janhvi Kapoor as the love interest adds nothing to the film’s storyline and the actor remains limited to being an eye candy. The ‘Mili’ star has showcased her acting prowess in several hard-hitting movies but does not get any chance to explore her character in ‘Devara’.
Saif Ali Khan’s Bhaira starts on a good note but his character also remains limited in the second half. As much as the background scores elevate the film, the songs in ‘Devara’ do nothing for its plot and are forgetful. Due to the weak second half, the climax of ‘Devara’ and its plot twists also seem underwhelming.
Performances
Jr NTR is undoubtedly the star of the show and played his roles flawlessly. He understands the intensity of his scenes and performs accordingly. From doing the action to his smooth dance moves, the actor knows how to be a commercial hero. He also seems to be at ease in front of the camera and has portrayed dual characters with excellence.
Saif Ali Khan is as fearful as Bhaira and will make you hate his character with his impressive performance. Janhvi Kapoor looks absolutely beautiful in every scene but her character remains poorly written.
Final Thoughts:
‘Devara’ will be a delightful watch for all Jr NTR fans but even his strong screen presence couldn’t overshadow the film’s weak plot. It’s a shame that female characters are so poorly written that their absence from the movie wouldn’t affect anything.‘Devara’ is overall an average affair and a one-time watch.
