As reported by The New York Times, the auction attracted more than 5,500 bidders from around the globe, surpassing expectations and establishing a new record for the auction house. A collection of 1,600 items, including notable props such as the whip from "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and the ax from "The Shining," fetched a total of $15.7 million. The live auction spanned five days and was held at Heritage's headquarters in Dallas, with simultaneous broadcasting on their website.

Craftsmen meticulously crafted the highly coveted "hero floating wood panel" from "Titanic" to mimic a salvaged piece from the actual 1912 shipwreck, featuring intricate floral designs reminiscent of the rococo style popular during King Louis XV's era in France. The prop measures about 8 feet long and nearly 3 1/2 feet wide, and craftsmen reinforced it with hardwood, making it play a significant role in the film's iconic scene.

During the auction, bidding for the prop commenced at $90,000 and swiftly climbed to a final selling price of $718,750, with the successful bidder opting to remain anonymous. Before the auction, the prop had been stored for nearly twenty years, having previously been showcased at a Planet Hollywood venue in Orlando, Florida.

Other items from Titanic were also put on auction

The auction also featured other items related to the film "Titanic," such as the ship's helm and costumes worn by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

Planet Hollywood, originally established in New York City in 1991 with backing from Hollywood figures like Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, expanded to more than 100 locations worldwide. Despite facing bankruptcy twice, the brand made a lasting impact on the entertainment industry, offering fans a glimpse into the lives of their favorite stars beyond the movie screen.

Robert Earl, chair and co-founder of Planet Hollywood, emphasized the brand's mission of bringing the glamour of the red carpet to fans globally, providing a unique connection to the world of movie stars. "Unless you were in LA or possibly New York, you never touched anything except seeing your idols on screen. You didn't have any involvement in any extensions of the movie or their lives, and we afforded that," he stated in a pre-auction statement.
