Assam Rape Case: Amid nationwide outrage over the Kolkata and Badlapur cases, a 14-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly raped by three men in Assam's Nagaon district, leading to massive protests. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma suggested that members of a specific community were involved in the crime.

The police said the incident happened around 8 PM on Thursday in the Dhing area of Nagaon district when the girl was returning home on her bicycle after attending tuition classes.

A senior official said three men on a motorcycle surrounded the minor girl as she was heading home, raped and assaulted her, and left her injured and unconscious by the roadside near a pond. Locals later found the severely injured Class 10 student, took her to a nearby medical facility, and informed the police.

One Suspect Has Been Arrested

The police said the victim was first taken to a local health center in Dhing and later transferred to a hospital in Nagaon for treatment and a medical examination. One suspect has been arrested, another detained, and a search is ongoing for the others. DGP G P Singh also visited the crime scene in Dhing along with district police officials.

The brutal crime, one of several recent incidents that have led to nationwide protests and outrage, sparked demonstrations as people from all walks of life took to the streets on Friday morning, demanding the arrest of those responsible. Shopkeepers closed their businesses, while social and political groups called for strict action against the culprits and increased security for women and girls. Tension gripped the area, prompting intensified police patrols and surveillance.

CM Biswa Sarma Targets A 'Particular Community'

In Hailakandi, Sarma accused a specific community of becoming more active in committing crimes since the Lok Sabha elections. He promised strong action against those responsible, stating that Assam has seen 23 such crimes against women in the past two months. Sarma noted that in Lower and Central Assam and Barak Valley districts, where indigenous people are now a minority, they live in constant fear, and urged people to understand the harsh reality faced by these communities.
