Assam Gangrape Case: One of the three suspects in the gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Assam's Dhing died early Saturday after he purportedly jumped into a pond while handcuffed during a scene reconstruction with the police.

According to them, the main accused, Tafazul Islam, who was arrested on Friday, fled from the custody of police and jumped into a pond.

14-Year-Old Allegedly Raped In Nagaon

On Thursday, three people are accused of gang-raping a 14-year-old girl in Assam's Nagaon district. Later, she was found lying injured and unconscious by the side of the road adjacent to a pond, after locals who saw her informed the police.

The police stated she was attacked and raped by the three individuals while she was returning from tuition riding her bicycle at around 8 pm in the Dhing area of the town.

Assam Gangrape Suspects Brought For Scene Reenactment

The police said the suspect was brought to the crime scene for a reenactment at about 3:30 a.m.

"The suspect got away from police custody and jumped into the pond. We started a search right away and found his body after about two hours," the police added.

One person was arrested and another was detained as the police scouted for the third suspect. The investigation progress was reviewed by Director General of Police GP Singh on Friday.

The police took Tafazul Islam to the crime scene for investigation, Swapnaneel Deka, superintendent of police, Nagaon district, told ANI. According to him, he had tried to escape from custody and jumped into a nearby pond. "Our team, with the help of the SDRF, searched for him and recovered his body from the said pond this morning," he said.
