Bengaluru News: Why Did This Techie Steal 50 Laptops Worth Rs 22 Lakhs?

A 29-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly stealing 50 laptops from an office in Bengaluru. The Bengaluru police informed that the suspect identified as Murugesh M from Tamil Nadu was working as a system admin in a private company.

He has been accused of selling the laptops at a cheaper cost, after stealing them from his office. The officials reported that the techie failed to pay off his debts after losing money in the tomato cultivation cyber-service businesses. The police have however successfully recovered all the stolen laptops.

The reports suggest that the tech admin incurred a heavy loss of about Rs 25 lakh during the Covid outbreak due to his unsuccessful ventures.

Techie Sells laptop At A Shop In Hosur

It was also revealed during the investigation that he managed the laptop inventory in his office, which enabled him to steal one or two laptops at a time. The accused admitted that he marketed them at a repair shop in Hosur.

The Techie stated that he made fraudulent claims at the shop like being authorized by the company to sell them. Murugesh further claimed that he stole the 50 laptops over two months.

Bengaluru Police Nabs Techie

The company investigated him after he stopped going to work on August 22. The CCTV cameras captured Murugesh stealing the laptops and leaving the room.

A case was registered against the accused on August 30. The Whitefield police nabbed him from a local theatre in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

Bengaluru Police could recover only five laptops from Murugesh since the accused confessed to selling 45 laptops in Hosur. The other laptops were retrieved on September 3.

After spending 8 days in police custody, Murugesh was sent to jail on September 9.
