Bengaluru is facing unprecedented heatwaves, exacerbating its existing water problems and prompting residents to adjust their daily routines. This has led many to reflect on the changes in life within the city's IT hub over the last decade.

In recent days, daytime temperatures in the city have surged to 38 degrees Celsius, nearing its highest-ever recorded April temperature of 39.2 degrees Celsius in 2016. The current temperatures are at least three degrees higher than Bengaluru typically experiences in April.

Weather scientist Dr. N Puviarasan attributed the rising temperatures to Bengaluru's decreased rainfall from the North-east monsoon last year. He noted the absence of winter rains in Bengaluru, primarily attributing it to climate change and El Niño conditions. The El Niño effect is associated with weaker monsoon winds and reduced rainfall.

Dr. Puviarasan, associated with the India Meteorological Department, also highlighted the correlation between rapid urbanization and the heightened temperatures in the city.

Residents, meanwhile, have had to adapt their routines to deal with the heat. Many have noted significant changes. For instance, one resident mentioned how the heat has disrupted their routine, preventing them from going for walks after lunch. Another resident, reflecting on the past decade, noted that the weather was significantly different when they first moved to the city.

Another resident mentioned that she constantly hydrates herself to stay healthy amidst the heat. Additionally, she pointed out the significant water problem being experienced in Bengaluru.

The city is also experiencing warmer nights, a departure from the pleasant evenings residents are accustomed to. Minimum temperatures are reaching new highs, with yesterday's recorded temperature in the city hitting 23 degrees Celsius, surpassing that of Delhi and Gurugram.

Double Challenge

The IT hub anticipates summer showers around April 14 to bring relief from the scorching heat.

The heatwave in Bengaluru, renowned for its comfortable weather, worsens the water crisis, forcing residents to reduce showering and cooking due to scarcity.

Some residents noted that reckless development projects have worsened the situation. They emphasized a lack of focus on addressing the groundwater level despite the emphasis on constructing apartments and roads.
