Beware! Getting WhatsApp Calls From These Numbers? Don’t Pick Or Else You Will Be Duped!
WhatsApp: An advisory has been issued to the citizens by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the Ministry of Communications, regarding incoming calls from certain numbers. As per the DoT, the citizens are receiving’s fraud call wherein callers possess himself as DoT official and threatens them that their phone number will be disconnected.
These callers intimidate mobile users by falsely claiming that their numbers are involved in illicit activities. This tactic mirrors the modus operandi seen in CBI-related cybercrimes, where fraudsters impersonate CBI officials and falsely accuse individuals of involvement in illegal activities.

'Dangerous' WhatsApp Numbers
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a warning about WhatsApp calls originating from foreign numbers, such as those beginning with +92-xxxxxxxxxx. These numbers impersonate government officials to deceive and defraud people.
The telecom ministry cautions mobile users that cybercriminals use such calls to extract personal information for the purpose of committing cybercrimes and financial fraud. The DoT emphasizes that it does not authorize anyone to make such calls on its behalf and advises the public to remain vigilant, urging them not to share any information if they receive such calls.
Where to Report Fraudulent Activity
The DoT recommends that citizens report suspicious communications through the 'Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications' feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in). Proactive reporting assists the DoT in preventing the misuse of telecom resources for cybercrimes and financial fraud.

Additionally, individuals can verify mobile connections registered under their name using the 'Know Your Mobile Connections' feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in) and report any unauthorized or unnecessary connections.
The DoT also advises citizens to report cybercrimes or financial fraud incidents to the cybercrime helpline number 1930 or via www.cybercrime.gov.in if they become victims of such crimes.
