A man employed at the Indian embassy in Russia, named Satendra Siwal, has been apprehended by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on charges of engaging in activities deemed anti-national and collaborating with the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI. The arrest took place in Meerut.

As per official statements, Siwal is alleged to have been supplying crucial classified information related to the strategic operations of the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of External Affairs, and Indian military establishments to the ISI. Siwal has been employed as an India-based security assistant at the Indian embassy in Moscow since the year 2021.

The UP ATS brought the incident to light following intelligence received from various sources indicating that ISI handlers were enticing Ministry of External Affairs employees with financial incentives to acquire sensitive information. Police authorities state that this information has the potential to pose significant threats to both the internal and external security of India.

Acting on the received intelligence, the police initiated an investigation employing both electronic and physical surveillance methods. During the course of the probe, it was discovered that Siwal, residing in Shahmahiuddinpur village, was implicated in the anti-India network. Subsequently, the UP ATS called Siwal for interrogation.

In the course of the interrogation, Siwal was unable to provide "satisfactory" responses and reportedly admitted to the crime. The police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Siwal, invoking section 121A of the Indian Penal Code (waging war against the country) and the Official Secrets Act of 1923.
