Bihar Farmer Cultivates 9-Foot-Long Banana Trees, Earns Rs 20 Lakh Annually

Bihar: Traditional farming often results in lower profits, with many farmers experiencing financial difficulties due to this. As a result, there is a growing interest in alternative farming methods. Banana farming, in particular, stands out as a lucrative alternative, offering the potential for substantial profits. Farmers who transition to banana cultivation can easily earn profits amounting to several thousand rupees.

Have you ever seen banana trees that are 9 feet long? A farmer in Sitamarhi, Bihar is cultivating bananas in such an extraordinary way. His banana trees have grown to heights ranging from 7 to 9 feet. People come from far and wide to see them. This innovative farming method has enabled the farmer to earn an annual income of Rs 20 lakh from his cultivation.

Surendra Singh, a farmer from Sitamarhi district, is known for cultivating bananas on a large scale. What sets his farm apart is the bananas he grows, which can reach up to 9 feet in height. You may have never seen such tall banana trees before. These trees are even taller than the farmer himself by two and a half feet. Interestingly, the farmer is still trying to determine the exact variety of these bananas. He mentioned that he sourced the plants from various states, including Kerala, Kolkata, and Hajipur.

The farmer himself has named this variety of banana "Kalashsthani." Each bunch of these bananas measures 6 to 9 feet in length, containing more than 50 dozen bananas. According to the farmer, it takes 18 months for these bananas to fully mature. Currently, this particular variety is cultivated in three bighas of land, with the plants reaching a height of 13 feet.

Surendra grows bananas on a total of 6 bighas of land, with three bighas dedicated to Kalashsthani and the remaining three bighas used for other types of bananas. The selling price for a bunch (ghavad) of these large bananas ranges from Rs 1,400 to 2,000 at retail, and they are sold in wholesale markets for Rs 40 to 50 per dozen.

The suckers (plants that grow from the root) of this particular banana variety are sold for Rs 100 per piece, contributing significantly to Surendra's annual income of Rs 20 lakh. When Surendra initially started banana cultivation, he brought banana plants from various states across the country. Among them, this variety has proven to be the most successful.

Surendra expressed his surprise at seeing such tall banana trees. He mentioned that approximately Rs 80,000 is spent on one bigha of land for cultivation, and he earns Rs 4 lakh from it. This underscores the profitability of his banana farming venture.
