Bihar’s Litti-Chokha Set For Global Recognition; GI Tag Application Process Initiated
Bihar's renowned dish, litti-chokha, is soon to receive a GI (Geographical Indication) tag, thanks to the initiative of Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) in Bhagalpur. This would be a matter of pride for Bihar. Professor Duniya Ram Singh, Vice-Chancellor of BAU, stated that efforts are ongoing to secure the GI tag registration, aiming to place Bihar in the fourth position. Previously, Bhagalpuri Katarni rice and Zardalu mangoes have also received GI tags and are exported abroad. The GI tag will further enhance the recognition of litti-chokha globally.
Litti-Chokha is a Traditional Dish: Professor
The professor explained that litti-chokha is a traditional dish of Bihar that dates back to the Magadh era. It is said that soldiers of Chandragupta Maurya would take litti-chokha with them into battle. The dish did not spoil easily and was light to eat. In the 18th century, it was the main food for travelers on long journeys. Initially, farmers in Bihar consumed litti-chokha because it was quick to prepare and beneficial for the stomach. Today, it can be found in most states across the country.
Efforts to Secure GI Tag for These Products Along with Litti-Chokha
In addition to litti-chokha, Bihar Agricultural University is also working to secure GI tags for several other products, including water chestnuts (singhara), Sonachur rice, Gulshan tomatoes, and Digha Malda. Professor Duniya Ram Singh, Vice-Chancellor of BAU, mentioned that the process for GI tagging of these five products is in its final stages. Among them, the most notable is the famous litti-chokha of Bihar, followed by water chestnuts (also known as singhara), Sonachur rice, Gulshan tomatoes, and Digha Malda.
