S Somanath Was Diagnosed with Cancer on Aditya L1 Launch Day

S. Somanath, the Chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), disclosed in an interview that he was diagnosed with cancer on the same day that India's Aditya-L1 mission was launched into space. He acknowledged that a growth was detected during one of his scans. Reflecting on the Chandrayaan-3 mission launch, he mentioned experiencing health concerns, though he admitted to not fully grasping the situation at the time.

Additionally, Somanath disclosed that the diagnosis coincided with the day of the Aditya-L1 mission launch, surprising him, his family, and colleagues. This unforeseen development prompted them to face this challenging time collectively, providing each other with support and motivation.

On September 2, 2023, during the Aditya L1 solar observatory's launch, S. Somanath's routine scan unexpectedly revealed a stomach growth. Further examination in Chennai confirmed a hereditary disease. This revelation added a significant health challenge alongside his professional responsibilities.

After the diagnosis, S. Somanath underwent surgery followed by chemotherapy as part of his treatment plan. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, "It was a shock for the family. But now, I perceive cancer and its treatment as a solution." His pragmatic outlook toward the disease and its treatment demonstrates remarkable resilience and an unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.

Despite uncertainties, S. Somanath's recovery from cancer has been miraculous. He returned to ISRO duties after spending four days in the hospital, resuming work from the fifth day onward without any pain.
