Controversy Erupts Over Ownership Of Matua Matriarch's House In Bengal; TMC Reacts

Political unrest erupted in Thakurnagar, a Matua-majority area in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, on Sunday night. Supporters of Union State Minister and Bangaon Lok Sabha MP Shantanu Thakur clashed with those of Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Bala Thakur over the ownership of a house where Binapani Devi, widely known as 'Boroma', lived until her passing five years ago.

The Trinamool Congress alleged that the confrontation occurred when Shantanu Thakur, accompanied by his supporters, attempted to forcefully seize control of Boroma's house, where Mamata Bala currently resides. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party MP countered, claiming that Mamata Bala Thakur has been unlawfully occupying the entire property. It's important to highlight that Shantanu Thakur is the grandson of Binapani Devi, while Mamata Bala Thakur is her daughter-in-law.

In the purported video, Shantanu Thakur and his supporters were observed breaking the gates of the house.

What did Shantanu Say?

Shantanu Thakur asserted that despite being one of the legal claimants of the property, Mamata Bala Thakur has been unlawfully occupying the entire property and even converting a portion of it into a TMC party office.

"I am one of the legal heirs and have full rights over half of this property. However, Mamata Bala Thakur has unlawfully taken full control of it," alleged the Union minister.

What did Mamata say?

Mamata Bala Thakur, a former Lok Sabha MP and current Rajya Sabha member, denied the allegations and filed a police complaint regarding the incident. She stated that Shantanu Thakur and his associates attempted to break into her house and forcibly entered her residence.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Shantanu Thakur defeated his closest rival, Mamata Bala Thakur, who is also a prominent leader of the Matua community. The election was contested with the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) as primary campaign issues.
