Delhi Rain Causes Chaos: 5 Dead, Power Cuts, And Water Supply Disruption

Delhi woke up to light rain on Saturday, following its highest single-day June rainfall in 88 years, which brought the city to a standstill. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light to moderate rainfall for the next five days, with some areas likely experiencing heavy showers until July 1.

Several areas of Delhi remain waterlogged and endured long power cuts after 228.1 mm of rain in 24 hours on Friday. At least five people, including two children, died in rain-related incidents.

For Saturday, IMD predicts thunderstorms with light to moderate rain over parts of Delhi-NCR, including Dwarka, Palam, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Manesar.

Delhi Rain: Recent Updates

• Two boys, aged 8 and 10, drowned in a rainwater-filled ditch in New Usmanpur, Delhi. Separately, a man drowned at a flooded underpass in Shalimar Bagh.
• Rescue personnel recovered two of the three laborers trapped under debris from a collapsed wall in Vasant Vihar, while the search for the third continues.
• Due to a fault at the Chandrawal WW-II pump house after heavy rain, Delhi's water supply is disrupted, affecting several areas. The Delhi Jal Board stated that the disruption will continue on Saturday.
• Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 will remain closed Saturday after a canopy collapse killed one person and injured four. All flights are now operating from Terminals 2 and 3.
• The heavy rain uprooted trees, damaging properties and cars, while locals waded through waist-deep water to exit homes.
• In Delhi's Kishanganj, police and rescue teams rescued bus passengers trapped in a flooded underpass, shown wearing life jackets and wading through water.

• The Delhi government has established a round-the-clock control center to oversee waterlogging conditions, as announced by Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj.
• The MCD and PWD deployed mobile pumps across various areas for water drainage, supported by rapid-response teams for handling waterlogging issues.
• Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena assessed the situation and instructed officials to establish an emergency control room and deploy stationary pumps to manage waterlogging.
• On Friday, the IMD reported that several extensive monsoonal weather systems, driven by atmospheric thermodynamic instability, caused intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Delhi.
