Father And Son Arrested For Attempted Murder After Petty Dispute Over Banana

The vendors allegedly attacked the two men with iron rods and threatened them with serious consequences if they returned to the area.

On Sunday, police arrested a 44-year-old man and his son, who are street vendors, for attempting to murder two individuals after a dispute over a banana in Thane district, Maharashtra, according to an official.

A 27-year-old man, who works as a mandap decorator, and his friend bought a dozen bananas from vendors in Bhiwandi town on Saturday and paid for them. However, the man's friend later took an extra banana from the vendors' basket, sparking a quarrel between the two groups, according to an official from Narpoli police station.

The individual who picked up the extra banana offered to pay for it, but the argument escalated. Following this, the two vendors allegedly attacked the two men with iron rods and threatened them with serious consequences if they returned to the area again, the official said.

Based on a complaint filed by one of the victims, the police registered an FIR against the two vendors late Saturday night. The sections of the Indian Penal Code under which they are charged include 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

The police added that both accused were arrested on Sunday.
