Heatwave Claims 56 Lives In Parts Of India, Rain Expected In Delhi Today

The death toll from the heatwave in certain regions of India has reached 56 as temperatures remain high in Northwest, Central, and East India. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted in its latest update that the situation is likely to improve slowly over the next two to three days.

According to data from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the latest death toll from the heatwave since March 1, 2024, has risen. In May alone, 46 fatalities were recorded as severe heatwave conditions affected various parts of central, eastern, and northern India, including Delhi.

Many regions across the country are experiencing intense heat, with temperatures ranging between 46 and 50 degrees Celsius. In several areas, temperatures have soared above 50 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperatures are being observed in the range of 45-48 degrees Celsius in numerous parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, eastern Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha.

Today, the weather department has predicted heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in many places across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and at a few places in Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh. Isolated places in Himachal Pradesh, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan may also experience heatwave conditions.

According to the seven-day forecast, Delhi is expected to have a generally cloudy sky with isolated heatwave conditions. Today, thunderstorms or duststorms are expected with very light rain, accompanied by gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph.

The IMD has forecasted that isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely to persist over Northeast India for the next 4–5 days.

The IMD stated in its latest bulletin that there will be a gradual fall in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C over Northwest and Central India in the next 3 days, with no significant change expected thereafter.

Similarly, a gradual fall in maximum temperatures by 3-4°C is very likely over East India during the next 3 days, with no significant change anticipated thereafter.

The weather department has added that the Southwest Monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of the northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of northwest Bay of Bengal, as well as the remaining parts of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Assam, and most parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

On Thursday, the Southwest Monsoon arrived in Kerala, a day earlier than its scheduled onset, and also advanced into most parts of Northeast India.
