India Detects New Mpox Case, Government Assures Viral Strain Is Absent

The public has been comforted by the Ministry of Health that, among others, contact tracing and monitoring are rigorously implemented to contain the situation.

The Indian government has confirmed that they have detected a case of mpox infection, popularly known as monkeypox, in the country. According to officials, this infection is not linked to the recently declared global public health emergency by the WHO. This infection has been found in a traveler from a country where transmission of mpox infection continues.

Infection Related to Travel, and to West African Clade

It also stated that laboratory tests confirmed infection with a clade 2 virus variant belonging to the West African strain of the mpox virus, according to the Union Health Ministry. It also belongs to a different clade from the currently globally circulating clade 1 variant, which has been declared a global health emergency. The latest case is no different from the previous 30 such cases detected in India since July 2022.

Patient Isolated and Stable

Isolation of the infected has been maintained at a designated tertiary care facility. The ministry confirmed that the patient remains clinically stable with no evidence of systemic illness or underlying health conditions.

Public Health Measures in Place

The public has been comforted by the Ministry of Health that, among others, contact tracing and monitoring are rigorously implemented to contain the situation. At this point, there is nothing to suggest that there is a wider risk to the public, and the authorities remain in charge of the case under routine procedures.
