IndiGo, India's largest airline, is set to introduce a business class on its flights for the first time. This significant shift in the airline’s business model will begin with the rollout of the Airbus A321XLR aircraft starting in mid-2024. Known for its economy-only cabin setup, IndiGo is making this move to cater to the growing demand for premium services on long-haul international routes.

The new business class will feature 35 of the Airbus A321XLR aircraft, configured to include eight rows of seats with a 2-2 arrangement. This setup contrasts with the denser 3-3 layout typical of their current economy class. Each business class seat will offer a 36-inch seat pitch, providing more comfort and space for passengers.

In addition to enhanced seating, IndiGo’s business class will include other premium amenities such as hot meals, a significant upgrade from their current practice of serving ready-to-eat food. The introduction of ovens on these aircraft will allow for a more varied and appealing meal service, aligning with the expectations of business travelers.

This strategic move aims to position IndiGo competitively against full-service carriers, particularly on international routes to destinations in Europe and the Far East. It also aligns with the airline’s broader expansion plans, which include new international routes and a comprehensive loyalty program set to launch by the end of 2024.

IndiGO CEO Pieter Elbers said "Over the past 18 years, India and IndiGo's growth stories have been closely seen. We believe as India gears up to become the third-largest economy in the world.
