With growing use of platform like WhatsApp for exchanging study materials and notes, Kerala`s Higher Secondary Education Directorate has called for ban on sharing of study materials via social media platform such as WhatsApp. The ban aims to emphasize classroom learning and remove the burden of students.
This order prohibits the distribution of the study materials and also the printing afterwards. Regional deputy directors have been asked to conduct inspection in schools and ensure that such things are not taking place despite the ban. Teachers are advised to not send the study materials on social media platform like WhatsApp.
Notably, during times of Covid-19, when schools were shut, online learning had taken the center stage. Online education was encouraged, classes were conducted on Google meet, Zoom etc. WhatsApp was widely used as a medium of communication between the teachers and students. Study notes, important materials were shared on WhatsApp. This process continued even when the schools were reopened. Classroom groups were created on WhatsApp and the teacher would share all the updates regarding the class or any change in the schedule.
This move by the Kerala`s Higher Secondary Education Directorate is expected to strengthen the traditional method of learning once again.
How Handwritten Notes Have An Edge Over Online Notes?
While the online availability of the study materials may have made it easier for the students to learn, share and access, it’s not considered a good learning method for students.
Handwritten notes are still considered to be the best option for educating and instilling the habit of learning in students.
Written notes help in memorizing and recalling the words. Studies show that a child picks up things better and faster by writing every word in paper.
Taking notes by hands help in understanding the concept better. It provides thorough understanding of the topic. It arises curiosity in the students to know what more?
It sharpens the skills of students, as everything is done manually. Students draw image, tables by themselves.
The errors often go unnoticed in online materials, whereas in handwritten materials errors can be pointed out timely and corrected also. This way the student also becomes aware of the mistakes and avoids repeating it in future.
The written notes can be visually engaging and appealing which catches the attention of students and drives them to learn more.
