Kolkata Doctor Murder: How A Bluetooth Device Helped Police Crack The Case
Police have arrested a man for allegedly raping and killing a trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata. Police found the medical student dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Reports claimed that the police arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer. But the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Vineet Goyal, did not confirm Roy's profession during a press meet, despite numerous questions. 'Whoever his profession is, he is a criminal for doing such a heinous act. He deserves the highest punishment. We have gathered enough evidence against him,' said the commissioner.
The police confirmed that it was a case of sexual assault from the post-mortem report. Roy left behind his Bluetooth headphones at the scene, which helped in his identification and subsequent arrest. The police also captured him on CCTV footage from the area around the time of the crime. They collected physical evidence from the scene.
'We are highly condemning and angry over the incident. We stand with the family of the victim and the doctors. The investigation is going on transparently. If the family wants another agency probe, we have no objection,' he said.
They videographed the autopsy in front of a magistrate, and the family members attended as witnesses.
The Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Department leads a special seven-member investigation team, with oversight from an Additional Commissioner of Police.
Fast-Track Justice: Mamata Banerjee
The Chief Minister of Kolkata termed the incident 'unfortunate and despicable' and said that she did understand the anger of the protesting doctors. She appealed to them to continue treating patients and reassured them of her support.
'I spoke to the victim's family and promised them that action will be taken. I have directed that the case be moved to a fast-track court. If necessary, the accused will have to face the strictest punishment though I am not a supporter of the death penalty,' she told a local TV channel.
She has also said that she would support the probe by a central agency if the family requests it. 'Administration has nothing to hide,' she said.
