Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: The recent crisis at RG Kar Medical College escalated with doctors keeping up protests demanding justice for a second-year postgraduate student of the college who was raped and murdered on August 9. Dr. Arnab Mukhopadhya, one of the frontrunners of the protests, called for a transparent discussion with the West Bengal Minister of State for Health, Chandrima Bhattacharya. He said all the channels of discussion are open, but still the conditions put before the doctors are non-negotiable and fair in the interest of the solution to the impasse.

Safety And Transparency In Question

Dr. Mukhopadhya said there was no transparency in the discussions. He said at a public meeting convened by the state government, Bhattacharya had mentioned that 'an open and frank discussion' needs to be done. The doctors have demanded that such a meeting if held, should be broadcast live so that everything is transparent. Dr. Mukhopadhya attacked Bhattacharya for his reported remarks that he felt disheartened while sitting comfortably and asked him to compare that with the situation the doctors are facing in the field. The protests have continued unabated despite the call for dialogue at the highest level of the state administration.

Protest And Demand For Justice

On Wednesday, a rally was organised by the West Bengal Medical Council in Kolkata, where doctors took to the streets, marching with banners and raised slogans, seeking justice for the victim and others concerned in the matter. Banners read: "In demand of punishment for all rapist-murderers and their accomplices in the Abhaya rape and murder case." The protest expressed the disgruntlement of the doctors and also called upon the call for accountability on such a heinous crime.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had invited West Bengal's protesting doctors for a closed-door meeting in the state secretariat. "The invite to the meeting only mentioned that the chief secretary would be meeting with us. It did not mention that the chief minister would be there, nor was there any clear agenda," Dr Aqeeb, a representative of protesting doctors said. They insist on a meeting that would address the five demands they have and provide an open platform where discussions are transparent. The refusal was based on a preference for open dialogue rather than a private discussion.

Ongoing Crisis And Safety Concerns

Protests have been raised over the RG Kar Medical College incident, with demands for justice over the incident. Protests have been raised over the killing of the student through calls for action against the perpetrators. Demands have been made by the students and staff of the medical college for justice over the victim, and assurance of safety for all.
