Landslide In Papua New Guinea Village Claims 100 Lives; Bodies Recovered From Rubble

Suddenly, a landslide buried the entire village under debris, reportedly killing about 100 people. Rescuers found dead bodies buried in the rubble and saved survivors, who were then taken to the hospital. According to an ABC report, the landslide occurred around 3 am today, Indian time, in Kaokalam village of Enga province, Papua New Guinea, located about 600 kilometers (370 miles) northwest of the capital, Port Moresby, in the foothills of the mountains.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that officials have not confirmed the exact number of deaths caused by the landslide, but the toll could exceed 100. Survivors are being relocated to safer areas.

Sources indicate that around 3 am, while people were sleeping, a portion of the mountain suddenly collapsed. Bad weather brought rain and mud along with the debris, destroying houses and burying the sleeping residents and their belongings. The injured alerted the police and administration about the landslide. Upon receiving the information, rescue operations began immediately, but many people had already perished.
