Mamata Banerjee warned Police in Kolkata rape murder case

As protests continued to mount over the heinous rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a stern ultimatum to local police. She warned that if the Kolkata Police failed to crack the case by Sunday, August 18, she would hand it over to the CBI.

The Chief Minister referred to the incident as 'extremely painful' and 'shocking,' therefore bringing home the seriousness of the situation. She revealed that doubts regarding involvement from within the hospital have been hanging over the unfortunate demise of the 25-year-old doctor since the beginning, which has further complicated the case. The tragic death of a promising young doctor sparked global outrage and led to widespread demands for justice.

Deadline Set For Kolkata Police

On the crime, Banerjee announced an all-out investigative approach. The West Bengal government mobilized a dog squad, video department, and forensic team to probe the case thoroughly. This would be a multi-faceted strategy with an idea to speed up the investigation process and get justice as soon as possible. She did say that once the deadline reaches, if the Kolkata Police was not able to come up with something substantial, she will have no problems transferring the case to the CBI for further investigation.

Mamata Banerjee Demands Fast-Tracked Justice

Banerjee also said that it was unbelievable that such a grievous incident could take place with whatever security exists in the hospital, including nurses and security guards. She further added that there is an "immediate need for punishment" for those responsible and asked to fast-track the judicial process so that the perpetrators of the crime get adequate punishment.

She said that she had told the police about the suspicions of the parents of the victim, who feel that someone from inside the hospital might be involved. In a decisive step, therefore, she announced their removal from their posts, which includes the principal, Head of Department, Medical Superintendent cum Vice Principal, and the Assistant Superintendent of Police from the hospital.
