Mass Food Poisoning In MP Institute: Over 100 Students Hospitalized

More than a hundred students at the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior district fell ill due to food poisoning, according to an official statement on Wednesday.

The affected students, aged between 18 to 25, had consumed meals at the institute's cafeteria. They are currently receiving treatment at a government hospital within the district, where their condition is reported as stable.

Dr RKS Dhakad, the Superintendent of the Hospital, shared that they were alerted about the situation yesterday evening at LNIPE. Subsequently, they promptly made arrangements for beds and admitted approximately 100 students. The patients exhibited initial symptoms consistent with food poisoning, but confirmation will come after testing the food they consumed.

Fortunately, there have been no casualties, although one student remains in critical condition and is on a ventilator. Additionally, five to six students are in serious condition among the 97 admitted, all within the 18 to 25 age range, as Dr. Dhakad explained.

Amit Yadav, the in-charge registrar of LNIPE, reassured that the students are in stable condition, with only five students in the ICU, four of whom are under observation due to fluctuating blood pressure. One student was critical initially but is now stable. Overnight, 97 students were admitted, and an additional 13 on Wednesday morning.

An investigation into the incident is forthcoming.

Prajanli Patel, one of the affected students, shared her experience, saying, "After eating in the institute's cafeteria, I experienced severe stomach and head pain. Following treatment, my head pain subsided, and I am feeling better."

The district administration, upon learning of the situation, mobilized quickly, sending a Food Department team to collect food samples from the institute. Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vinod Singh stated, "Samples of the food items used have been collected and sent for testing. Particularly, milk and paneer are under scrutiny, along with samples of all spices and ingredients used. Further actions will be determined based on the test results."
