MK Stalin Writes To PM Modi, Urges 8 Chief Ministers To Skip NEET For Medical Entrance

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin restated his plea to the Centre to exempt the state from the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical college admissions and to completely eliminate the nationwide system.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the exemption of NEET for Tamil Nadu, the chief minister emphasized that admissions to professional courses should solely rely on 12th standard marks, rather than imposing an additional stress of a separate entrance exam on students.

"In this regard, we had passed a Bill unanimously in our Legislative Assembly to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET and to provide medical admissions based on 12th standard marks. This has been sent for Presidential assent but the assent is still pending,", Mr. Stalin stated in the letter.

He also reached out to the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, requesting his support for Tamil Nadu's plea for exemption from NEET.

The irregularities during the recent NEET exam validated the state's opposition to it, he said. "Many other states have also started voicing their views on the need to do away with this selection process," the chief minister told the PM.

Given these circumstances, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a unanimous resolution on Friday, urging the Union Government to grant its assent to the Bill exempting Tamil Nadu from NEET. Additionally, they called for an amendment to the National Medical Commission Act to abolish this selection process nationwide," he stated.

Meanwhile, Mr. Stalin also sent separate letters to his counterparts in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Telangana, and West Bengal, urging them to consider passing similar resolutions in their respective assemblies to eliminate NEET.

Stalin emphasized the importance and seriousness of the issue, urging his counterparts to pass similar resolutions in their state Legislative Assemblies. This would urge the Union Government to abolish the NEET exams in the interest of students across their respective states. Additionally, he informed Rahul Gandhi about the resolution passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
