Mumbai College Faces Backlash Over Jeans and T-Shirt Ban, Implements New Dress Code Following Hijab Controversy

The management of Acharya Marathi College in Chembur, Mumbai, has prohibited students wearing jeans and t-shirts from entering the college premises, citing a notice issued by the college administration. Prior to this, the college had also banned hijabs on campus. As a result, students are now unable to enter the premises wearing jeans and t-shirts.

On June 27, the college administration issued a notice stating that students will not be allowed to enter the college premises wearing torn jeans, t-shirts, or revealing clothes. The notice also specified that all students must wear decent attire, including half-sleeve or full-sleeve shirts. The notice was signed by the college principal, Dr. Vidyagouri Lele.

According to the newly issued dress code by the college administration, any student can wear Indian or Western attire. Students should refrain from wearing clothes that depict religious or cultural inequality. Additionally, female students must remove items such as veils, hijabs, caps, badges, or burqas in the common room before moving anywhere else in the college premises.

The college administration has stated regarding the dress code that they prefer students to wear respectful attire. They haven't introduced a uniform but have encouraged wearing both Indian and Western clothes. They believe it would be better if students continue wearing these clothes even after securing jobs. The college principal mentioned that students were informed about the dress code during admission. She also noted that students attend college only for about 120 days out of 365 days in a year.
