Five youngsters viciously attacked a man and his dog during an evening walk in Hyderabad. Widely shared CCTV footage shows the attackers thrashing the man and his dog with sticks, despite attempts by his family members to intervene. Police have arrested the five assailants and placed them in judicial custody.

As the thrashing continued, one blow to the head caused the dog, a Siberian Husky, to collapse. Srinath, 42, and his dog suffered serious head injuries, while his mother Rajeshwari and wife Swapna sustained cuts and bruises.

The Madhura Nagar police stated that the attack continued a quarrel between two families that began on May 8. Following complaints from both sides, the police registered two FIRs on that same day.

What did the Hyderabad police say about this?

The police reported that Srinath’s family lives in Rahmath Nagar, and L Dhanunjaya and his wife Keerthana are constructing a house nearby. On May 8, while visiting their new house, Srinath’s dog allegedly barked and charged at them, sparking an altercation between the two families.

Dhanunjaya, 35, and Keerthana reported to the police that Srinath’s family had beaten them up. Meanwhile, Srinath and Swapna reported that their dog had merely approached Dhanunjaya and his wife, who then started abusing their family with filthy language. Additionally, Srinath and Swapna claimed that Dhanunjaya and his associates assaulted them.

An officer from the Madhura Nagar police station told that they registered an FIR on May 14 and arrested five persons on charges of attempted murder, who were then remanded. The incident involved two families; the accused are constructing a house near the dog owner's residence. Due to an ongoing dispute, FIRs were also registered on May 8. The officer mentioned that because of the election, they were busy but had settled the matter by filing FIRs. However, the families quarrelled again, leading to an attack on the dog and its owner, resulting in bleeding injuries.

Madhu, Srinath's brother, informed the police that while Srinath was walking their dog in front of their house, five individuals launched a sudden attack, attempting to kill both him and the dog. He asserted that it was a retaliatory strike stemming from their earlier conflict. Madhu accused the assailants of wielding two iron rods and two bamboo sticks sourced from the construction site.

Various charges have been imposed on neighbours

Authorities have charged the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including section 147 for rioting, section 148 for rioting while armed with a deadly weapon, and section 307 for attempted murder, along with section 149 for unlawful assembly and common object. Additionally, they have been charged under section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The police arrested Lachireddy Dhanunjaya, Bilan Sai Kumar, Bhagantri Praveen Kumar, Lachireddy Gowri Shanker, and Srireddy Rambabu.

When reached for comment, Madhu stated that Srinath and his wife Swapna had undergone surgery and received 10-15 stitches each. They had been transferred from the ICU. The 18-month-old dog remains in critical condition and refuses to eat. Madhu added that MRI and CT scans revealed a broken jaw and a clot in the dog's brain.
