Newborn Strangled By Woman While Feeding, Motive Linked To Girl Child Stigma

A 28-year-old woman in Delhi has been arrested for allegedly strangling her newborn daughter to death while breastfeeding her, reportedly due to the societal pressure of having given birth to four girl children, according to the police. A case of murder has been registered, and the infant’s body has been recovered.

Police Receive Distress Call

On Friday morning, Khyala police station in West Delhi received a call reporting the disappearance of a six-day-old infant. When officers arrived at the scene, the mother initially claimed that the baby had gone missing after she fell asleep while breastfeeding the previous night. She said she woke up to find the newborn gone.

Suspicious Behavior Leads to Discovery of Infant’s Body

The police began investigating the case, checking CCTV footage in the neighborhood. During the search, the mother requested to visit the hospital to remove her stitches, which the police found unusual but allowed due to her medical condition.

Shortly after, the police discovered a bag on the roof of an adjacent house, containing the newborn’s body. The infant was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mother Confesses to the Crime

Upon further questioning, the mother broke down and admitted to killing her daughter. She explained that the newborn was her fourth girl child, two of whom had already passed away. Overwhelmed by societal stigma and pressure, she confessed to smothering the infant while breastfeeding and then disposing of the body on a nearby roof.

Investigation Ongoing

Police are now awaiting the results of the autopsy to verify the cause of death and further corroborate the mother’s account.
