The Janata Dal (United) asserts that the Agniveer scheme, which recruits youth into the Armed Forces for four years, played a role in influencing the Lok Sabha election outcome. Following the scheme, only 25% of participants will be retained, while the remainder will be discharged with certain financial benefits.

Since its implementation in 2022, the defence community has criticized the scheme, alleging that it has compromised the warfighting capability of the forces and unfairly disadvantaged soldiers. The Congress included a promise to abolish this new army recruitment scheme and revert to the previous one in its manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

On Thursday, JD(U) spokesperson KC Tyagi urged for modifications in the Agniveer scheme. "Since its introduction, the Agniveer scheme has faced significant criticism, and we observed its impact on elections as well. Changes need to be made in this new army recruitment," he informed Aaj Tak.

Tyagi, also stated to ANI, "A portion of voters has expressed dissatisfaction with the Agniveer scheme. Our party aims for a thorough discussion on the shortcomings raised by the public and their subsequent rectification...Regarding UCC, the party's national president, CM, had corresponded with the Law Commission chief. We support the initiative but advocate for inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders to find a resolution."
