Retired Punjab Police Officer Kills Son-In-Law At Chandigarh Court During Divorce Mediation

Chandigarh: An IRS officer, Harprit Singh, was fatally shot by his father-in-law, Malwinder Singh, a retired AIG of Punjab Police, within the premises of a Chandigarh court.

On Saturday, Malwinder Singh shot Harprit Singh at the district court, where they were attending a hearing related to a family dispute. Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur reported that divorce proceedings between their families have been ongoing since 2023, and this was the fourth mediation session.

The gunfire triggered panic in the court premises. Lawyers at the scene detained the accused, locking him in a room before notifying the police. When the police arrived quickly, they took Malwinder Singh into custody and recovered a .32 caliber pistol along with four spent bullets and three live ones.

Harprit Singh attended the mediation meeting with his parents, while the other side was represented by Malwinder Singh, a retired AIG from Punjab. Malwinder Singh shot Harprit near the mediation center. Harprit was quickly taken to PGI, where he was declared dead upon arrival, according to the Chandigarh police.

The police arrested the accused and recovered a pistol along with four fired bullets and three unused bullets. Malwinder Singh has been charged with murder and various offenses under the Arms Act. The investigation is ongoing, according to the police.
