After addressing a public rally in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with five women from Sandeshkhali who accused suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan of sexual assault. They also claimed that suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan was still threatening them.

“They put forward their ordeal and PM heard them patiently like a father figure. The victims were very emotional with the fact that PM understood their pain,” sources in the Bharatiya Janata Party told.

Sandeshkhali, a village in North 24 Parganas, has been in turmoil following allegations of sexual assault against local Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates by several women. Shahjahan, a 40-year-old TMC leader known as 'Bhai' among supporters, was arrested last week. Following his arrest, the TMC suspended him from the party for six years. Additionally, there are accusations of land grabbing by Shahjahan and his associates, as reported by several villagers.

Before his rally in Barasat, Prime Minister Modi criticized Mamata Banerjee regarding the situation in Sandeshkhali. He expressed shame over the events there and accused the TMC government of attempting to shield the responsible individual. He highlighted setbacks from both the high court and the Supreme Court. Modi warned that the repercussions of the Sandeshkhali incident would resonate throughout West Bengal.

The prime minister's criticism follows a recent development where the Calcutta High Court instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the case concerning the assault on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali on January 5. Shahjahan and his supporters allegedly attacked the officials, resulting in injuries to three of them and damage to their vehicle.

Tensions escalated on Tuesday when the West Bengal CID declined to transfer the detained TMC leader to the CBI, despite a high court order. This occurred shortly after the Mamata Banerjee-led government challenged the court's decision in the Supreme Court. The situation in Sandeshkhali has become a significant battleground between the TMC and BJP leading up to the Lok Sabha elections.
