Bangladesh's former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, made her first public statement on Tuesday since fleeing the country. In her message, she described the coup against the Awami League as a severe insult to her father, the founding President of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the countless martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

Condemnation of the Coup

Sheikh Hasina expressed deep anguish over the coup, emphasizing that the legacy of her father, under whose leadership Bangladesh gained independence and national identity, had been gravely insulted. She highlighted her dismay at the disrespect shown to her father’s legacy and the blood of millions of martyrs, calling for justice from the people of Bangladesh and criticizing those responsible for her ouster as the Prime Minister.

The Awami League chief also urged the people of Bangladesh to observe National Mourning Day on August 15, in memory of her father's assassination. She encouraged the nation to mark the day with dignity and solemnity by offering prayers and floral tributes at Bangabandhu Bhavan.

Concerns Over Violence and Loss of Life

Sheikh Hasina expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence and loss of life in Bangladesh, noting that students, teachers, policemen, journalists, cultural workers, and innocent bystanders had lost their lives due to terrorism and violence. She extended her deepest condolences to those who, like her, are mourning the loss of loved ones.
