In the forested area under Rajauli police station jurisdiction, work was underway to lay railway lines. Late Tuesday night, all laborers were sleeping in their base camps after working. It was during this time that a snake attacked Santosh Lohar, a resident of Panduka in Latehar district, Jharkhand. Following the incident, Santosh caught the snake and bit it three times, causing its death.

Santosh explained that a superstition prevails in his village that if bitten by a snake, one should retaliate by biting it three times, which nullifies the snake's venomous effect. Believing in this superstition, Santosh bit the snake, causing its death. Subsequently, his companions admitted him to the nearby sub-district hospital. The young man's condition remains critical. Following the incident, discussion among other laborers at the base camp has centered on this topic. They argue that the snake might not have been venomous, which saved Santosh's life. Otherwise, a tragedy could have occurred.

Doctors Advise

Doctors advise that if bitten by a snake, seek immediate medical help. Remove rings and watch before swelling begins. If possible, safely take a picture of the snake for identification, which can assist in treatment after a snakebite. Avoid driving yourself to the hospital because the venom can cause dizziness and loss of consciousness. Sit or lie down comfortably, ensuring the bite is in a neutral position. Clean the bite with soap and water, and then loosely cover or wrap it with a clean, dry bandage.
