Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, witnessed its hottest May day in ten years on Thursday, May 23rd, 2024. The mercury soared to a scorching 32.2 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record set in 2013. This scorching temperature is just one symptom of an intense heatwave gripping the Kashmir Valley.

The heatwave has caused discomfort and disruption across the region. Meteorological department officials warn of a dry and hot spell for the coming days, with no significant change expected until May 29th. This lack of rain raises concerns about a heightened risk of forest fires.

While 32.2 degrees Celsius is the hottest May temperature recorded in a decade, Srinagar has experienced even higher temperatures in the past. However, the extended heatwave and consistently above-normal temperatures are a cause for concern.

Officials are urging residents to take precautions against the heat, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during peak sun hours, and wearing loose, protective clothing. The education department has advised schools to avoid holding outdoor assemblies during the afternoon heat.

Doctors have also issued heatwave guidelines, reminding people to be aware of the signs of heatstroke and dehydration. With the heatwave expected to persist, staying cool and following safety precautions will be crucial for Kashmiris in the coming days.
