Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami-led government passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill in the state assembly, making Uttarakhand the first in India to implement such a code. The bill replaces old laws governing marriage, divorce, succession, and cohabitation, despite opposition calls to refer it to a select committee. The bill will now be forwarded to the President for approval.

After the Assembly session, Chief Minister Dhami informed reporters that the law promotes equality, uniformity, and equal rights. He addressed doubts surrounding it, stating that the two-day discussion in the Assembly resolved concerns. He emphasized that the law doesn't target anyone but rather aims to support women who face challenges due to societal norms. Dhami highlighted that this legislation would strengthen women and their self-confidence and contribute to their overall development. He confirmed the bill's passage and announced plans to send it to the President for approval. Once signed by the President, the government will promptly implement it as a state law.

During the earlier discussion of the Bill in the Uttarakhand Assembly, Dhami reassured that it was crafted in alignment with the Constitution.

He highlighted, "After independence, the makers of the Constitution granted the right under Article 44 for states to introduce the UCC when appropriate. People have doubts regarding this. We crafted the draft in accordance with the constitutional framework," stated the Chief Minister in the Assembly.

Significantly, the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code was among the top promises outlined in the 2022 Uttarakhand Assembly election manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
