WATCH: Bus Passengers Rescued With Life Jackets From Flooded Delhi Underpass

In New Delhi, heavy rainfall led to severe flooding under the Azad Market underpass, trapping passengers inside a bus for over two hours. Police and emergency teams successfully rescued them, with footage showing passengers swimming to safety and being aided by rescue personnel using ropes and life jackets.

New Delhi: Passengers trapped inside a bus beneath the Azad market underpass in Delhi were rescued by police and emergency teams on Friday. The bus had been stuck under the bridge for more than two hours due to extensive flooding following heavy rainfall in the capital.

Footage from the scene depicts passengers swimming to safety from the submerged bus, aided by policemen and rescue personnel who used ropes to assist them. Each passenger, equipped with life jackets, was carefully guided across the flooded roadway under the bridge, clinging to the ropes for support.

Heavy rainfall inundated numerous roads across Delhi-NCR, offering a welcome respite from the scorching heatwave that had gripped the city for the past month. The waterlogging disrupted traffic flow and compelled pedestrians to navigate through knee-deep water.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Safdarjung observatory in Delhi recorded 228mm of rainfall by 8:30 am today, marking the second-highest 24-hour rainfall ever recorded in June. The highest recorded was 235.5mm on June 28, 1936.

At the Indira Gandhi International Airport, a section of the roof at Terminal 1 collapsed early this morning. Sadly, one person lost their life, and eight others were injured in the incident, which occurred around 5:30 am as reported by the Delhi Fire Services.
