New Delhi: The Delhi government held a meeting with experts to create a winter action plan for addressing air pollution. The meeting, chaired by Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai, explored solutions like artificial rain and encouraging work from home. Environmental experts and officials provided key suggestions during the discussion.

Gopal Rai mentioned that Delhi had 110 days of clean air in 2016, and this number is expected to rise to 206 days in 2024. Despite an increase in construction and vehicles since 2016, air quality has improved, He added.

Pollution in Delhi is divided into two periods: moderate from February to September and severe from October to January. To address this, a winter action plan is being created. The plan will incorporate suggestions from 50 experts across 33 departments and institutions. A joint meeting of these 33 departments is scheduled for September 5 to discuss and finalize their contributions to the winter action plan.

Here Are key Suggestions From Experts For Delhi:

  • Launch a global campaign to raise awareness about zero carbon by changing people’s habits.
  • Implement work from home earlier, not just when the AQI is critical. Departments should plan for this.
  • If the odd-even scheme isn’t in place, consider voluntary vehicle restrictions similar to Mexico’s system, which doesn’t involve fines.
  • Start artificial rain between November 1 and 15 to address increased pollution in winter.
  • Use CSR funds to provide heaters to security guards to control biomass.
  • Adjust office hours to reduce traffic jams and vehicular pollution during peak times.
