Big Jolt To RCB! Glenn Maxwell Takes Break From IPL 2024, Here's Why

Glenn Maxwell, the all-rounder for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Australia, has opted to take an indefinite break from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Speaking to the media during the press conference following RCB's bitter defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday night, Maxwell revealed his decision. Despite facing criticism due to his poor batting form, Maxwell was not included in the XI against SRH, with Will Jacks taking his place. Post-match, Maxwell clarified that he had requested skipper Faf du Plessis to try out someone else on his own accord.

Maxwell Confirms His Decision

During the press conference, Maxwell announced his decision to take an indefinite break from the ongoing IPL due to feeling mentally and physically strained. He did not specify the duration of his absence.

"After our team's recent string of losses, I approached Faf [du Plessis] and the coaches to suggest trying out another player," Maxwell stated. I believe now is the right time for me to take a break, focus on my fitness, and return stronger if needed later in the tournament."

Maxwell admitted his recent batting struggles, especially after the powerplay, an area where he has previously excelled. "I felt I wasn't contributing positively with the bat, given our current standing in the tournament. It's a good chance for another player to step up."

Maxwell acknowledged the importance of taking breaks for mental rejuvenation in such situations. "T20 cricket can be unpredictable," he explained. "In previous games, I made good decisions but faced challenges. It's about not getting off to a good start, which can happen in T20s. It's easy to overthink and forget the basics."

Sunil Gavaskar had also criticized Maxwell's performance, particularly against fast bowling. "He has struggled against deliveries at chest or shoulder height," Gavaskar noted. "While he handles lower deliveries well, those above trouble him."
