Defending champions Argentina claimed their historic 16th Copa America title with a 1-0 victory over Colombia, courtesy of an extra-time goal by substitute Lautaro Martinez at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida on Sunday. Martinez, who was the tournament’s top scorer, scored in the 112th minute after receiving a precise pass from Giovani Lo Celso and lifting the ball over the Colombian goalkeeper, Camilo Vargas. This goal sparked jubilant celebrations among Argentina's supporters. Martinez’s strike was his fifth of the tournament, securing him the Copa America 2024 Golden Boot.

After a goalless 90 minutes and a challenging extra-time period, Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez delivered the decisive goal, continuing his impressive form from the past month. Lionel Messi, who had appeared to suffer a non-contact injury in the 64th minute and was seen covering his face on the bench, watched as Martinez scored the winning goal. Following his crucial strike, Martinez ran to the bench to hug his captain, celebrating Argentina's historic 16th Copa America title.

The match, which took place at Hard Rock Stadium, started 1 hour and 20 minutes late due to crowd issues. This win marks Argentina’s third major title in a row, following their victories in the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup, putting them alongside Spain’s achievements of winning the 2008 and 2012 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup. Additionally, Argentina ended Colombia's 28-game unbeaten streak, which had persisted since a February 2022 defeat to Argentina.

As the Golden Boot winner with six goals, Lautaro Martinez’s late strike proved to be his most crucial. Despite fatigue and intense emotions, he managed to power through the defense and place his shot with precision. Argentina had missed such decisive moments in previous years, but not this time. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi, who had been forced off the field early due to a swollen ankle, could only watch. Initially overcome with tears of sadness as he left the pitch in the second half, Messi’s emotions shifted to joy when Martinez scored. On this night, Messi's teammates stepped up, leading Argentina to victory once more. Although the Messi era may be approaching its end, Argentina's dominance remains unshaken.
