Dominic Thiem, the former U.S. Open champion, announced on Friday that he will retire from professional tennis after the 2024 season. Thiem, who is 30 years old and hails from Austria, has faced significant challenges in recent years due to a wrist injury.

Following his wrist injury in 2021, Thiem struggled to regain his top form and saw a decline in his world ranking. Despite being a former world number three, he has found it difficult to return to his previous level of performance.

"It is a very important, very sad, very beautiful message that this season will be my last one," 2020 US Open winner Thiem wrote on Instagram.

"There are some reasons behind it: firstly, of course, my wrist. It is not exactly the way it should be and how I want it. The second reason is my inner feeling: I have been thinking about this decision for a very long time.

"I've had success and trophies which I never dreamt of. It was an incredible journey. In the end I came to the conclusion that this decision to end my career at the end of this season is the only right one." he added.

Thiem, who has reached the final of the French Open twice, expressed earlier this year that the 2024 season represented his final opportunity to restore his game to the standards he expects and to rise in the rankings.

Presently ranked 117th in the world, Thiem secured his first ATP Tour victory of 2024 with a win over Maximilian Marterer at the Estoril Open. However, he was eliminated in the round of 16 by Richard Gasquet. Earlier in the year, he exited the Australian Open in the opening round.
