Ashwin had held the coveted spot until January 2024 after which Bumrah had gone on to take it from his teammate following a successful spell in the away Test series against South Africa earlier.

Ashwin, who ascended to the top spot in the ICC Test Rankings for the first time in November 2015, was lauded for his exceptional performance in the recently concluded five-Test series against England, where India triumphed 4-1. Despite a slow start and having to depart during the third Test due to a family emergency, Ashwin bounced back impressively, claiming 26 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, across the series. His remarkable contribution was evident in the final two Tests in Ranchi and Dharamsala, where he played a pivotal role in India's victories.

In his 100th Test appearance in Dharamsala, Ashwin showcased his brilliance by taking nine wickets, which included a five-wicket haul in the second innings, contributing significantly to India's comprehensive win by an innings and 64 runs against England. Notably, Ashwin achieved the milestone of 500 Test wickets during the third Test in Rajkot, becoming only the second Indian bowler, following Anil Kumble, to accomplish this feat.
