IND Vs BAN, 1st Test: Jasprit Bumrah’s Lethal Bowling Challenges Both Virat Kohli And Yashasvi Jaiswal In Nets
It was a massive test for young Indian cricketer Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had ended the splendid 2023-24 season with a sensationally good Test series against England. At Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium, it was in the nets that Jaiswal faced a real one-from-Bumrah challenge.
According to a report by PTI, it has been understood that during a recent practice session, Bumrah managed to rattle Jaiswal's stumps. For the record, the fast bowler consistently times his delivery to beat the outside edge of Jaiswal with pace and seam movement, and that has kept the young batsman stumped.
Yashasvi Jaiswal: An Asset For Team India
Jaiswal, hailed as a future star after scoring over 1,000 runs in his first nine Tests and emerging as a standout player with 700-plus in a single series against England, would have to be under the spotlight throughout the upcoming season. Critics pointed out that he had difficulties handling pace and bounce during two Tests against South Africa on the challenging tracks of Centurion and Newlands. While his batting against England's spinners was explosive, he will be put to a much tougher test when he arrives in Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting November 22. He will have to face Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood. Before that, though, he has to face Bangladesh's pace and bounce especially from bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana.
Pacers Have Proved To Be A Challenge For Jaiswal
Jaiswal's first-class season has been going wrong by all accounts so far; he has scored two low scores in the Duleep Trophy where Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed used to exploit his weakness against extra bounce. At the last net session, Bumrah came out on top against Jaiswal consistently, clean bowling him twice and frequently beating him around the outside edge. Such was the problem for Jaiswal in regard to the pacer's ability to shape the ball away that it posed him challenges both on pace and swing, since his stumps were his downfall too as he seemed to be a bit unclear on his off-stump as well, pushing at deliveries with hard hands.
Bumrah's Tight Bowling In Nets, Ahead Of Bangladesh Series
Jaiswal's troubles did not end with Bumrah though. Net bowlers Simarjeet Singh, Gurnoor Brar, and Gurjanpreet Singh frequently found the paceman capable of beating his outside edge and at one stage, Virat Kohli came in to bat just to kind of talk to him about his technique and errors. Kohli and Jaiswal played together for almost an hour, accounting for nearly 50 balls faced. Again, Kohli was seen playing his clever cover drive and on-drive, while Jaiswal was more wary of leaving balls, especially from Bumrah. The clay-like soil of the practice pitch, where ball bounce doesn't always behave itself, just added to the complexity of shot-making.

Even as Bumrah toiled for almost five overs, trying out Kohli with a few mark-up balls, the two batsmen were facing net bowlers. Jaiswal was more sound against spinners and was better in his square cut throughout. And, of course, there was Rishabh Pant, who is fabled for his marvelous aggression against left-arm spinners. Pant batted confidently against Ajit Rams and M. Siddharth, too, handling their deliveries well.
