During the game, Indian cricket fans witnessed something they had never seen before: captain Suryakumar Yadav bowled the last over and took two consecutive wickets. His captaincy also received praise as he wisely gave the 19th over to Rinku Singh, who performed well.

Rinku Singh took Sri Lanka's crucial wicket on the second ball of the 19th over, dismissing Kusal Perera for 46 runs by catching his own ball. Then, on the fourth ball of the same over, he sent Ramesh Mendis back to the pavilion. Mendis, attempting a big shot, was caught near the boundary by Shubman Gill. These two key wickets helped Team India make a comeback in the match, but tension rose again during the last over.
