IPL 2024: New Rules Introduced For 17th Edition Of Tournament You Probably Didn't Know About

The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) is set to begin from March 22nd and with it comes a set of new rules as well. New rules have been implemented which will make its debut this year. These rule changes are aimed at enhancing the excitement and competitiveness of the tournament. The defending champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), led by MS Dhoni, will kick off their campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), captained by Faf du Plessis, at Chennai's iconic MA Chidambaram stadium on Friday, March 22.

Dhoni, who last played in the IPL 2023 final, leading CSK to victory over the Gujarat Titans, will face off against Kohli, who has been inactive since January this year. Just days before the match, RCB announced a name change, replacing 'Bangalore' with the city's current name, Bengaluru.

Two Bouncers Per Over

One of the major rule changes for this season involves allowing bowlers to deliver two bouncers per over, a departure from the previous limit of one. While T20Is adhere closely to ICC regulations, which permit only one short-pitched delivery per over, Tests and ODIs allow two bouncers per over.

This alteration aims to balance the competition between bat and ball, giving bowlers a new opportunity to challenge batsmen. The decision follows a successful trial in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India's domestic T20 championship, indicating widespread approval from players and officials.

Smart Replay System

Additionally, IPL 2024 will introduce the Smart Replay System, a cutting-edge technology set to transform umpiring decisions. Powered by eight high-speed Hawk-Eye cameras placed around the ground, this system provides real-time images to assist the TV umpire, leading to quicker and more accurate judgments.

By eliminating the need for a TV broadcast director as an intermediary, the system grants the umpire direct access to a broader range of visuals, including split-screen images. This advancement is expected to streamline the review process, enhancing the efficiency of decision-making during matches.

Impact Player Rule To Continue in IPL 2024

Furthermore, the Impact Player rule introduced in the previous season will continue, allowing teams to strategically substitute a player during a match, adding another tactical dimension to the game. The BCCI has also decided to maintain the provision of verifying a catch when a referral for stumping is requested during IPL 2024 matches, diverging from ICC norms where only stumping calls are reviewed by the on-field umpire.

Although the IPL is embracing these progressive changes, it has chosen not to adopt the stop clock rule, departing from recent ICC playing conditions for white-ball international matches.
