Under ICC regulations, the chairmanship election now requires a simple majority of 16 votes, meaning a candidate needs just nine votes (51%) to win, a shift from the previous requirement of a two-thirds majority. Jay Shah, who currently leads the influential Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) subcommittee, is a prominent figure in cricket administration and is well-regarded by many of the 16 voting members. At the age of 35, Shah could become the youngest ICC chairman, following in the footsteps of Indian predecessors like Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.

However, the BCCI constitution, as approved by the Supreme Court, stipulates that an office bearer can serve for a maximum of six years before requiring a three-year cooling-off period. Overall, a person can hold office for up to 18 years in total—nine years in a state association and nine years in the BCCI. If Shah opts for the ICC role while still having a year remaining in his BCCI tenure, he would retain four years left in his BCCI term.
