At the start of the much anticipated India vs England 5-match Test series, Indian star batter Shubman Gill was given the no.3 spot in the batting order. Replacing Cheteshwar Pujara in the lineup, many fans and pundits were not too sure about the young batter's selection as Gill had not been too good in the red ball format earlier. However, Gill had later proved his critics wrong and showcased some fine batting displays during the course of the series.

“Short mid-wicket is Virat Kohli's position. It is very difficult to replace him. Virat and (Suresh) Raina. (Shubman) Gill started off there in the first test, and he looked very uncomfortable. By the final Test, he got it (like Vijay says to Sivakarthikeyan). He also took a catch of (Ben) Duckett on covers. It shows that he wants to improve his game on a day-to-day basis, and he's working on it,” Ashwin said.

The young cricketer faced significant criticism after taking over Cheteshwar Pujara's No. 3 position, having mainly opened in other formats for India and initially struggling for runs. However, he excelled against England, playing crucial innings that contributed to the series win. While experts and fans have lauded his batting, Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted his impressive performance in replacing Virat Kohli in another important role. Ashwin suggested that Gill's ability to handle pressure indicates he's destined to become the next big star in Indian cricket.

“I give extra praise to Shubman Gill because he has seen the ups and downs of the game. People discussed his position in the XI. He had a few technical issues of his own. He came past all that to become what he is today, like how gold is molten from flames and water. And for somebody who is bound to be the next superstar of Indian cricket, as people project, this is a very important journey for him. He has handled the pressure, and massive applause is for him,” said Ashwin.
