MS Dhoni

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanath has dismissed reports suggesting that the franchise requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reinstate a now-scrapped rule that could allow them to retain MS Dhoni at a lower price. Previously in the IPL, an international player who had retired for five years could be classified as an 'uncapped' player, which would significantly reduce their retention cost. This rule, however, was abolished after IPL 2021. Rumors circulated that CSK wanted this rule reinstated to retain Dhoni as an 'uncapped' player at a price as low as Rs 4 crore, compared to the Rs 12 crore they paid in 2022.

CSK CEO Refutes the Rumors

Viswanath has refuted these claims, stating that the franchise did not make any such request to the BCCI. He clarified that while the BCCI mentioned the potential consideration of the 'uncapped player rule,' nothing has been officially announced. He emphasized that CSK is waiting for the official rules and regulations to be released by the BCCI.

Uncertainty Over Dhoni's Future in IPL

With the IPL mega auction only a few months away, there is still uncertainty surrounding Dhoni's future in the tournament. Speculation about his potential retirement continues, but Dhoni has remained silent on whether he will participate in IPL 2025. The possibility of a mega auction before the upcoming season could complicate CSK's decision on whether to include Dhoni as a player, as doing so would occupy one of the limited slots available to the franchise.

Dhoni's Legacy and CSK's Dilemma

Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 and is nearing the end of his cricketing career. Retaining him might not be the most strategic move for CSK, given the limited slots they have ahead of the auction. However, the franchise would also be reluctant to exclude the legendary player, who has led them to five IPL titles.
